This Year’s Treasures: Antique Machinery Show

Besides the parade and the $1.50 kiddie cones at the Sunset Ice-Cream booth, here are the two treasures that I found at the Antique Machinery Show last weekend.

I’ve been looking for a sturdy vintage tray for our glasses and I was delighted to find this one for less than $20. We store the day’s cups and glasses here so they aren’t left all over the tables and counter-tops.  Also, whoever is responsible for filling-up at mealtime can place all of the glasses back in the tray and deliver the beverages to the table in one trip. (That’s a time-saver in a big family like ours!)

I love this vintage suitcase trio. It required a lot of patience on my part. The bottom blue suitcase I picked up for free at an estate sale 11 years ago. It has been a reliable decoration/ storage unit ever since. I found the second brown suitcase at the Spring 2016 Antique Machinery Show for a few dollars. It now holds several boxes of puzzles. And that adorable topper was this year’s treasure! Marked $10, bargained down to $8. So the whole look cost me around $11 and 11 years. 🙂 I couldn’t love it more.

What’d you find at the show this year?

 Enjoy your home,

Survive Winter Ailments with Penns Valley Community Learning Garden: Upcoming Workshops

Enjoy this update from Penns Valley’s lovely herbalist, Jennifer Tucker.

“Hello Herbal Friends!

Spring, summer, late summer I have enjoyed a bountiful harvest from the Penns Valley Community Learning Garden of medicinal plants…and the garden is still abundant! The Medicinal Learning Garden is a source of the plants used in teas, salves, oils, vinegars and tinctures.

Late spring harvests of Lemon Thyme, Sage, Lavender, Elder blossoms and Apothecary roses. Late summer the Elderberries gifted an abundance of large juicy berries; I dried the berries for winter tea combinations and froze berries to make anti-viral syrups in late fall.  Late blooming self-seeded Calendula flowers are being harvested weekly until frost, dried or infused in olive oil for use in salves.

The work of the garden continues and I am very grateful for volunteer helpers that come and go throughout the growing season; Betsy, Sarajane, Katie, Evelyne, Fernanda and Lulu…Thank you!

Future workshops…here is a peek preview, save two dates in October!

Saturday, October 8th guest herbalist and midwife, Sarah DePasquale will join with me to co-teach a workshop on Herbal Support for Women’s Transitions.

Sunday, October 30th Beth Hornbein will return to share her herbal inventory and use of herbs in a workshop Preparing for Winter Season, I will share medicinal roots.

Both workshops will be held at the Breman Ballroom in Millheim. Description and registration information to follow in early September!

Enjoy the last of summer’s days and beginning of fall in the air, eat your weeds!”

Antique Machinery Show: September 8 – 11

We love the Antique Machinery Show!

It’s the summer’s final celebration of great food, restored tractors, tractor pulls, and over 800 vendors of antiques, collectibles, and crafts. Our children love the steam engines that putt-putt along cutting wood, cycling wash water, or shelling corn. My favorite part is the flea market… I keep my eye open for vintage suitcases, galvanized pails, and other country accept pieces that make our old farmhouse look like… well, an old farmhouse! 🙂

Of course, when you go, keep your eye open for yard sales along Route 192. The community makes the most of this weekend. You’ll find treasures left and right!

You need to know:

Sept. Sept. 8, 9, 10, 11, 2016 Dawn to Dusk Daily

Daily Admission $5.00 | 4 Day Pass – $15.00 | Sr Citizens – (Thur Only) $3.00

Penns Cave is located 5 miles east of Centre Hall on Rt. 192.

From the Nittany Antique Machinery Show website:For decades, folks from various parts of the United States have traveled to the Penns Cave grounds to enjoy the large flea market with over 700 vendors where they have found treasures, old and new. They say that if you can’t find what you’re looking for here you probably won’t find it anywhere!

The food vendors offer the best eats you’ll ever try.

But always, the stars of the show are the over 800 tractors on display, over 800 campers, and more than 40 parts vendors available on the grounds. There’s a little something special for everyone. Why not spend some quality time looking back when quality meant everything. We look forward to seeing you!”

Support 4 Young Men through the Smiles/ Fleck Raffle

Community members are hosting a raffle to benefit 4 terrific young men in our community as they get their footing after significant tragedies. Most of you personally know that 2 local families – the Smiles family and the Fleck family – have suffered the great loss of their fathers this year. Each father was survived by two teenage boys. Please consider buying a ticket to help support these fine young men as they journey through life amidst this unexpected sorrow.

You can be a part of the community support by purchasing a raffle ticket. There are many great prizes in this raffle. Well over 40 prizes, including cash and gun prizes. Each ticket is $20 and includes a raffle ticket for all the prizes, as well as for food and beverages at the drawing. Must be 18 to buy a ticket.

Several community members are selling the tickets. I do know that you can purchase them at The Garden on Pennsylvania Ave., down the road from Sheetz.

The drawing will take place on October 15, 2016 at the American Legion in Centre Hall.
Doors open at 3:00p.m.
Drawing time: 4:00p.m.
You do not need to be present to win.

Consider joining us as we rally around these families. Community support will mean so much to these young men – now, and in the future.

Our Saturday Trip to the Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday, stop by the American Legion in Millheim to meet area farmers and enjoy their local food – from cheese to meat and kale to carrots. Open from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. our local Farmer’s Market is a wonderful outing to add to your weekend meandering. Oh, and the added bonus of our particular Farmer’s Market is the community garden. Look for the passionate gardeners who are extremely knowledgeable and helpful in all-things-homegrown from herbs to honeybees.

This Saturday, I stocked up on eggs, replenished our maple syrup, couldn’t resist the beautiful beets, and snagged a few herbs for the empty pots on our deck.

On my way home from the Market, I stopped at The Garden in Centre Hall (open every day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.). We’ve been loving their peaches and corn. And, of course, I couldn’t resist this ginormous melon! I’ll probably serve cantaloupe boats for breakfast tomorrow morning.

Add “Farmer’s Market” to your calendar for next Saturday!

 Enjoy your home,
